Unleashed (2005)

I watched the unrated version.  Surprisingly, I was fine with the fight scenes being unrated.  I actually felt the heartwarming parts were kind of dragging.  Hmm, what did that say about me?  I've been desensitized by the modern media.

It was always fun to watch Jet Li.  As for Morgan Freeman, did he ever age?  Why did he look the same in 2005?  That was twenty years ago!

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON 27 JULY 2024:

Shirtless Hugh Jackman!!!

There was no plot, and I didn't want it to have a plot.  The more they explained how they brought Wolverine back, the more boring the movie would've been.  No plot = Fun!  The songs matched to whatever was on the screen at that moment.  The acting was great.

A lot of cameos poked fun at the studio executives that couldn't get shows produced.

This movie was basically a fan service to everyone that wanted to see Deadpool fighting Wolverine; to see Wolverine putting on his mask; and to see Wolverine's shirt blown off for no reason.  I very much appreciated everyone's hard work in this movie.

RE-WATCHED ON DVD 27 JULY 2025:

A year later, this movie still did not disappoint.  In fact, I gained a better understanding with subtitle on, because Deadpool talked too much and it was difficult to follow him in the movie theater.

Even on a small screen, Hugh Jackman’s sadness and disgust with himself still came through.

War of the Worlds (2005)

The first half was great.  The suspense was intense.  The lighting and the sound put me into the scene, and made me as uncomfortable as the people in the movie.  Characters were distinct, too.  Incompetent father, annoying teenager, and a young daughter.  I understood why each of them acted the certain way.  The alien's laser beam was scary.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Then the second half went to poo.  The teenager abandoned his little sister when she needed him the most.  The alien's laser beam was replaced by sucking human blood.  It was never explained why.  The aliens traveled light years to arrive on Earth just so that their machine could be easily chopped up by earthling's puny axe.  The aliens with advanced technology did not know about different planets had different bacteria that could kill them.  Finally, the teenager survived without a scratch and everyone was happy, completely forgot his abandonement.  ⭐⭐

Overall, ⭐⭐⭐.  Worth a watch if it's free.

The Naked Gun (2025) trailer review

Why oh why Liam Neeson?  Do you need more money?  Aren't Taken series and Star Wars and everything else enough?

You have been my #1 man since high school when I saw Les Miserables (1998).  Why would you do The Naked Gun?  This movie physically hurts me.

Here's an idea.  Partner up with John Wick.  You and Keanu Reeves could do wonders to action movies.

I also suggested you play Van Helsing in a Dracula movie.  You'd have such gravitas to the character!

Superman (2025)

This "new" rendition of Superman played on cuteness and nostalgia.  Do not overthink the plot.  The story made no sense.  A super villain that was able to make a pocket universe but wanted only half of an Eastern European country?  Why didn't he just make the pocket universe bigger and made himself king of the universe?  The Justice Gang made no sense, either.  They were plot devices to push the story forward.

Of course Krypto was cute.

Now, the nostalgia part.  From the poster the new Superman posed like Christopher Reeves, to his eyeglasses that looked like Christopher Reeves, to him saving children, women, a squirrel.  Every pose had been done before.

I do like one part that Superman wasn't completely selfless.  When the Justice Gang was fighting a giant floating squid-thing, Superman didn't help them.  He was more concerned about finding his lost dog.  I thought that was cute.

Nicholas Hoult was great as a hero and as a villain (NosferatuRenfieldMad Max Fury Road).  I hope to see more and more of him in diverse roles in the future.

Captain America: Brave New World (2025)

Back in the day this would have been a direct-to-TV movie.

What didn't work:

- a new Falcon:  even though he was in military, he seemed not belong to a unit.  He followed Captain America around; appeared to be hiding in a bunker, but still had access to network and intelligence.

- a Black Widow wannabe:  couldn't fight; not as sexy; not as charismatic.

- link to The Incredible Hulk (2008) by bringing back Liv Tyler as the Red Hulk's daughter.  Seventeen years had passed.  I could barely remember that movie.  Maybe some people recognized Liv Tyler's voice right from the start, but I did not understand the surprise until the end.

- the villain's makeup:  horrible, terrible.  They ran out of money and simply put a fake green mask on someone.

- Bucky Barnes was running for Congress???!!!

What worked:  Only worth your time if it's free.

Conclusion from a non-comic book audience:  Hulk simply is not an interesting character to be made into movies.  Leave him be in comic books.  Stop trying to bring him onto the big screen.  It didn't work in Hulk (2003) and The Incredible Hulk (2008); it didn't work as a villain in Captain America.  It will not work in the future.

Movies I Could Not Finish

Weekend at Bernie's (1989) - not the movie's fault.  I was exhausted from work and gym.  It had some funny parts.  Maybe I'll try again.

Remo Williams:  The Adventure Begins (1985) - racist and sexist Kung Fu Panda without the funny parts.

Grumpy Old Men (1993) - the grumpy old men were a bit funny.  It was the female characters that I couldn't stand.  Also, I don't need to watch this movie.  I'll just watch Math Teacher turn into a grumpy old man in thirty years.

The Naked Gun 2 1/2:  The Smell of Fear (1991) - I hung in there for ten minutes.  Juvenile, childish humor.  No part of it was funny in those ten minutes.

The Protector (2005):  The fight scenes shook too much that I got nauseous.  The editing was so bad.  I think they cut out all the plots and moved directly to the fights.  So the first ten minutes made no sense.  Then I gave up.

The Professor (2018)

The dialogues were witty enough to keep me engaged, but at the end, I felt like I wasted my time watching it.  The ending made no logical sense.  The Professor seemed like a good father.  He was going to abandon his daughter when she was going through a breakup?

Married Life / 婚姻生活, #8

Guess what Math Teacher burnt onto my nonstick pan?

A slice of sourdough bread!  A perfect shape!

He's buying me a new pan and a new toaster oven!  Yay!  😁😇

Independence Day (1996)

Almost 30 years!  OMG!  The movie still held up!  Fast-paced non-stop story telling.  The movie did not waste time in telling us the aliens were coming in the first five minutes.  No suspense.  The movie was simply dealing with WTF do we do now.

Seeing the White House being blown up was still unsettling, even though I've watched this movie more than four times.

I hope they have a 30-year anniversary reunion next year.  Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith are still big name actors.  Bill Pullman is supposedly to return for Spaceballs 2.  It would be a great way to re-advertise this movie.
