Project Hail Mary (2026)

Math Teacher read me the book years ago.  The book was dense with math and science stuff.  I couldn't get past it.  I gave up after a few chapters.  Math Teacher read the whole book by himself in two days.  It was THAT good!

Fast forward to 2025.  When Math Teacher heard Ryan Gosling was making Project Hail Mary into a movie, he was ecstatic!  That was all he could talk about.

Fast forward to 2026.  The movie did not disappoint.  Math Teacher loved it!  He said they cut some heavy math and science for the sake of the run time (2.5 hours already), but that was ok.  I agreed.  A normal person like me could not take all that science-y things.  I needed to see colors and moving pictures.

Rocky was adorable.  The friendship was so touching I almost cried.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 (not five stars because I felt horrible for Rocky.  His people did not understand Newtonian physics but they still sent him out to save their planet.  A suicide mission!  *sniff*)

ps.  Do I know Rocky is a fictional fake alien????!!!  I was so invested in his life.  Maybe this should be a five-star movie.

Set about 200 years before Heartless. This was the love story of the last Princess of Bhaliq Empire, referenced by Count Covasna in 'Til Death Do Us Part.

I'm not universe-building. I'm simply too lazy to come up with brand new empire names, location names, all kinds of other names. Basically I'm using Krenn Empire as a stand-in for China's Tang Dynasty but lasted a lot longer, like Rome. I could pick and choose different centuries to write a story.

Book Title: The First Smile will Topple a City. The Second Smile will Topple a Nation.
書名：一笑傾城，再笑傾國
Tagline: Even the Brave will fall for the Fair.
內容：英雄難過美人關

"Even the Brave will fall for the Fair" is way too long. So I changed the book title to "The First Smile will Topple a City. The Second Smile will Topple a Nation". But! This name is even longer!! Thank Heavens this name could be shortened as "The Second Smile".

Here's my horrible translation of my favorite lines in this song.

Dracula (1992)

The good parts of this movie came from Bram Stoker's Dracula.  The bad parts of the movie came from the moviemaker.

At first I thought this was a comedy because of Dracula's hairstyle. From the top it looked like D-cup breasts. From the back it looked like butt crack with butt hair hanging out. I thought Francis Ford Coppola was supposed to be an artsy director; did everyone on set think that hairstyle was acceptable?

Then Dracula cried when he heard Mina got married. Eyeliner and white powder dripped from his face. Yuck! Dracula was pale from lack of sunlight, not from cosmetics!

That led into my main complaint. I disliked them turning Dracula into a lovelorn sick boy. Dracula liked beautiful women. That was it. He was not in love with Mina.

Mina was not in love with Dracula, either. She was a good friend and a faithful wife. This was why Mina was such a badass in the book, not for being Dracula's wife.

I'd rather them calling this another vampire movie, not Bram Stoker's Dracula. None of the people that made this movie obviously read the actual book.

Horror short story, #3

I might have watched too much vampire movies!

My parents, my brother, and I were touring somewhere. Europe, for sure. The hotel had a tour to go to this old castle. Many hotel guests signed up, including us. We were bussed to the castle. It was old, with stonewalls and metal spikes. It was cloudy and cold. I was feeling weird and said we had to go. We didn't see Mother. I kept insisting to Father and Brother that we had to go. Next thing I knew, Father went looking for Mother. I told Brother we must leave now. It was getting dark. Brother said no; then he went looking for our parents.

The tour guide now insisted we all had to go. I got on the bus with the other tourists. Strangely, multiple buses came; only one bus was full and returning. So I was in my seat, completely freaked out. Then this woman in the seat behind me elongated her neck, like a snake. Her head hovered on top of me, then she shot towards me to bite my neck. Blood everywhere.

I know that long-neck woman was Rokurokubi (ろくろ首, 轆轤首).  I don't know why I dreamed about her on a tour bus to an old castle in Europe.  Rokurokubi does not kill nor drink blood.

關雲長 / The Lost Bladesman (2011)

I don't know why they called him "Lost".  Guan Yu wasn't lost.  Physically he knew where he was, where he needed to go, and how he needed to get home.  Mentally he was loyal, faithful, unwavering in his conviction.  So, that was a strange title.  The fight scenes were ok.  Some quick cuts; some difficult maneuvers.  Overall, it was one hour too long.  Too much talking, not enough fighting.

The Professor and the Madman (2019)

Math Teacher read the book.  He was intrigued that it was made into a movie.  It turned out they over-dramatized the whole story.  Math Teacher said everyone in the book was actually nice, decent human being.  Everyone was quite helpful and dedicated to their job.  Well, that didn't make a good movie, right?  So, there was quite a lot of shouting in the movie when it wasn't necessary at all.

But seriously, how fun could it be for two men deciding on words in a dictionary?  I mean, it was a great history to learn, but it was not a story of more than two hours.  This belonged on History channel, as a one-hour special, or as a segment with other short and interesting history tidbits.

History channel, call me!

Horror short story, #2

I don't know what I was smoking when I had this dream.  It was so vivid that I had to write it down.

I also don't know how to classify this story because I was awoken by a noise.  Either this was a sweet family reunion short story or a murder horror crime scene.

My brother and I were at my parents' place, which was a cottage-cabin type of house.  We came back from groceries shopping.  Plastic bags and paper bags were everywhere on the kitchen counter.  Everyone was chatting.  I decided to go upstairs to my bedroom for a nap.

Gradually the chatter died down.  Gradually I woke up from the nap.  I looked into every bedroom; I went downstairs; the groceries bags were still on the kitchen counter.  I called out for them.  Nobody answered.  I shrugged.  Maybe they went out again.

I went upstairs.  There appeared a white grandmother.  She had straight, shoulder-length grey hair.  She wore a red sweater.  She was plump but basically a regular-size grandmother.  She was not part of the family.  She was not in the cottage earlier.

My heart jumped.  I asked, "Grandmother, do you want to go downstairs?"

She replied, "Sure."

So we walked downstairs to the kitchen.  She tapped on the microwave oven and commented, "I could never figure this thing out."

I heard a "weeeee" noise.  It wasn't too loud.  I woke up from the dream.  I thought it was the neighbor or Math Teacher.  I asked him later; he said he didn't make any noise around that time, but the neighbors were being loud as usual.

So, either the noise prevented me from meeting my white grandmother from a previous life, or the noise prevented me from being murdered by a white grandmother in my dream.

Seriously, was I high or something?  I would have never thought of this idea in a million years if I were sober.

On the other hand, I do my best writing while sleeping.

19 November 2023 Update:  I finally finished editing book 4!!!  Now onto book cover design.  Will I make Thanksgiving Black Friday sale?  We'll see!

Original Post:

Book 3, To Hold & To Cherish, was published in April 2022.  I promised myself that the series finale book 4, 'Till Death Do Us Part, would be published by the end of 2022.  It didn't happen.

Four business trips and two personal trips in 2022.  Then grandfather passed away.  Now I'm in the process of moving and still without furniture after 2.5 months.  I'm exhausted.

No.  This is not allowed.  I've got to publish the last book by the end of 2023.  It's actually already written from the prologue to the epilogue.  I just need to go back to every chapter, edit, proofread, and add/delete background information such as weather, the character's clothing in the weather, etc.

In the meanwhile, I'd like to thank all the readers that gave me stars on Amazon and Goodreads.  Big promotions when book 4 is published, as an appreciation gift!

The Jewel of Seven Stars by Bram Stoker (1903)

Wow, what a different time.  In 1900s it was completely normal for British people to raid Egyptian tombs, take all the treasure, and unwrap mummies as they pleased.  British people called others doing exactly the same thing grave robbers while called themselves scientists.

In 21st century, I thought what galls!  What cajones!  How dared they!  Had they no shame!

Then they lived happily ever after!  I almost threw the book away!

Then I found out that was the revised 1912 ending.  Bram Stoker had a different ending in the 1903 edition.  Readers can find both endings in Bram Stoker website.

In the 1903 edition everyone that did horrible things died.  Whew!  What a relief.

The Jewel of Seven Stars is not as good as Dracula.  One character in the story was a lovesick boy that lusted after a girl.  One character talked on and on about whale oil and steam engine for an entire chapter, then he finally got to the point of stealing a mummy.  Oh no, not stealing.  He took the mummy in the name of science.

Bram Stoker changed the ending because back then, readers were horrified that everyone died.  Apparently they were completely fine with stealing Egyptian national treasures.  Bram Stoker should've stuck to his guns.  Before the main characters showed up, everyone that had touched the mummy died.  So of course by story logic, all the main characters that touched the mummy must also die.  No happily ever after for them.

Horror short story, #1

My very first Sci-Fi Space Horror short story!

I don't write sci-fi.  I don't like horror.  I don't know what I was smoking when I had this dream/nightmare.  It was so vivid that I had to write it down.

Guy A invited Guy B to his place.  Guy B was a homeless bum and thought he had nothing to lose by following a strange man home.

They arrived at Guy A's place.  Guy A gave Guy B a tour.  It was pitch dark.  Couldn't see anything.

Then Guy A said to Guy B, "The tour is over.  I'm going to eat you now."  Guy A held onto Guy B tightly and tried to take a bite.  Guy B struggled and fought hard; he managed to snap Guy A's neck.

Guy A died.  Guy B wanted to leave.  At this time, a robotic velociraptor appeared.  The Raptor told Guy B, "You killed my master.  I am going to eat you now."  They fought and struggled.  The velociraptor was stronger than Guy B; somehow he managed to flip onto the Raptor's back and rode it like a horse.

Guy B made the Raptor take him to the front door.  That was when he realized he was in a space ship/shuttle/station of some sort.  That was why everything was in complete darkness.

The velociraptor told Guy B, "There's nowhere to go.  I am going to eat you now."

Burn, Witch, Burn! by Abraham Merritt

This book was too scary.  If not for Math Teacher reading it to me, I wouldn't have read it at all.

It didn't help when I just went to Towada Art Center, there was a giant witch sculpture at the entrance.  The book description of the witch matched exactly to this sculpture.

The witch's hobby was to make dolls.  At the end I warned Math Teacher to never buy me dolls.

It was a short book.  The author could've expanded a little bit on the witch's and her sidekick's motive.  Instead, in the last chapter the author talked about there were already dolls made by witches in the ancient times.  It felt like the author did a lot of research, didn't know where to put it, so he stuck everything at the end.

A fun read for Halloween!
